Asbestos is a toxic substance used in the construction and chemical purposes. The history of this chemical is very interesting and controversial, especially for Canada which is one of the leading manufacturers of this chemical in the world. Asbestos was used extensively in the 19th century by manufacturers and builders. Because its resistance to heat, electricity and chemical damage, its sound absorption and tensile strength are used in buildings, fabrics, retardant coatings of fire, concrete, bricks, pipes and fireplace cement, heat, fire, and acid resistant gaskets, pipe insulation, ceiling insulation, panels fireproof gypsum, flooring, roofing, lawn furniture, drywall compound of common and oven, even the electrical wiring and heating plate. Until the mid – the 1980a, where it was found that asbestos causes serious diseases such as malignant mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis (a form of pneumoconiosis).
1906 was the year that the first death related to asbestos occurred, but even before the researchers noticed a large number of premature deaths and lung problems in asbestos mining towns. If you look even more on the history of the ancient Greeks observed that slaves wore clothes of asbestos has had lung problems. In 1924 in England the first country to recognize the problems with asbestos, doctors made the diagnosis of asbestosis was made first taste. England was also the first country to include controlled ventilation and excusable asbestosis a work-related diseases in the 1930a, ten years before the United States. The term Mesothelioma also came to the medical literature in 1931 and was associated with asbestos in the 1940a. The use of asbestos was truly horrible. From 1952 to 1956, the first filtered cigarette on the market – Kent, used crocidolite asbestos in its Micronite "filter". During World War II thousands of tons of asbestos were used to wrap the pipes, the line of the boilers, and roof of the engine and turbine parts. This led to a large number of asbestos-related diseases among dockworkers. America is the country's leading asbestos victims arriving approximately 100,000 people were killed and unknown number of terminally ill at present.
France was the first country to ban the use of asbestos in 1997 and called the ban worldwide, 2000 of French ban was upheld by the Organization World Trade Organization. Canada has its own special relationship with asbestos. The only asbestos mines operating in Canada today in Quebec and government owned Quebec. Now Quebec is the second largest producer in the world after Russia and the world's largest exporter of asbestos (mostly Asian countries). Prohibition the use of this substance is economically important for the country and in 1999 the Canadian government representatives appeared before the World Trade Organization to challenge the prohibition of asbestos, yet this initiative was not supported. Today, this chemical is banned in 60 countries in whole or in part. As for the situation asbestos in Spain is illegal to sell in the country, with mining and export of asbestos is legal.
